Terms and Condition

For Digital Innovations for Business Resilience in the East African Community Program

  1. Digital Innovations for Business Resilience in the EAC is an activity under the project “Digital Skills for an Innovative East African Industry” (dSkills@EA).
  2. The political partners are the East African Community Secretariat and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The main implementation partners are the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), together with an East African-German academic consortium of universities and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
  3. The contracted implementing organization is StartHub Africa Ltd., Mobuto Road 180 B, Kampala Uganda. starthubafrica.org
  4. The competition is open to university students and recent graduates (having graduated no more than 1 year ago) studying at a University in East Africa (Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania or South-Sudan).
  5. There is no entry fee into the competition.
  6. By entering this competition, an entrant shall be deemed to be consent to be bound by these terms and conditions.
  7. StartHub Africa Ltd shall not be responsible for entries not received for whatever reason.
  8. StartHub Africa Ltd. reserves the right to cancel or amend the competition and these terms and conditions without notice in the event of a catastrophe, war, civil or military disturbance, act of God or any actual or anticipated breach of any applicable Law or Regulation or any other event outside of the promoter’s control. Any changes to the competition will be communicated to the entrants as soon as possible by the promoter.
  9. StartHub Africa Ltd. shall have the right, at its sole discretion and at any time, to change or modify these terms and conditions, such change shall be effective immediately upon posting on this website https://dskills.iucea.org.

Rules of Competition

The rules of the competition shall be as follows:

Qualification for Ideathon

All entries will be reviewed, and teams will be selected based on meeting the standard requirements and their fit with the program, which are:

  • All Applicants should be university students or recent graduates should have graduated who should have graduated within the past one year from an East African University,
  • All Applicants should be between the age of 18 – 35, who have an idea for a digital innovation or are in early-stages of implementing their innovation,
  • All Applicants should be in teams with a minimum of two people.
  • All participants MUST be fluent in the English Language.

Qualification for Bootcamp

During the Ideathon, teams will receive detailed information on how to apply for the bootcamp. Applications for the bootcamp will be evaluated by experts based on

Must-Have Problem – how urgent and important is the identified problem?

Solution – how effective and close to a realistic plan is the solution?

Innovation– how innovative is the solution?

Team – does the team have the skills and is it committed to executing the idea?

Technology – Is the idea technology-based or implemented with digital means?

Selection of Country Winners

During the National Pitch-Event, two teams per country will be selected by an expert jury to enter the Grand Finale. Evaluation Criteria are:

Must-Have Problem – how urgent and important is the identified problem?

Solution – how effective and close to a realistic plan is the solution?

Innovation– how innovative is the solution?

Team – does the team have the skills and is it committed to executing the idea?

Technology – Is the idea technology-based or implemented with digital means?

Selection of East Africa Winners

During the Grand Finale, up to 5 Winners will be selected by an expert jury and will receive a share of a total grant of USD 10,000. Evaluation Criteria are:

Must-Have Problem – how urgent and important is the identified problem?

Solution – how effective and close to a realistic plan is the solution?

Innovation– how innovative is the solution?

Team – does the team have the skills and is it committed to executing the idea?

Viability – is the business model scalable and has viable unit economics?

Technology – Is the idea technology-based or implemented with digital means?

Grants

The total grant amount is USD 10,000 and will be shared among the selected winners. The awarding of grants will be announced during the Grand Finale online. Grants will be handed out only to the selected winners who will have submitted a budget and milestone plan, copy of valid Student ID, copy of valid National ID and contact data. Additional requirements may be shared with the bootcamp participants during the bootcamp.

Intellectual Property Rights

  1. Applicants confirm by entering the competition that, to the best of their knowledge, they own all Intellectual Property Rights (“IPRs”) subsisting in their entry to the competition and that their entry does not infringe any third party’s IPRs. They are responsible for obtaining any necessary permission from third parties to use their IPRs in their submission. StartHub Africa Ltd reserves the right to disclose the applicant’s identity to any third-party claiming material posted or uploaded by it to the competition website constitutes a violation of their IPRs, or their confidentiality/privacy rights. StartHub Africa Ltd reserves the right to ask for additional evidence or documents to validate that all the information supplied by the Applicants is true and complete.
  2. Subject to above terms, we recognize Applicants’ ownership of the IPRs subsisting in their entry to the competition.
  3. Neither Starthub Africa Ltd nor any other partner of the program retains any equity or ownership of the idea or product upon application. Applicants retain full and exclusive ownership of their information and intellectual property rights. Any idea submitted will only be used for the purpose of evaluating the entrants’ application to Starthub Africa Ltd.

Publicity and Use of Personal Data

  1. By submitting an entry to the competition, the Applicants give StartHub Africa Ltd and other partners of the program the permission to use the information provided in his/her entry and during his/her participation in the competition (including his/her personal details; logos, photos, videos uploaded by you or your pitch and taken during trainings and events) for the purposes of administering and judging the competition, for any purpose connected to the competition and for promotional purposes. StartHub may share this information with jury members, its partners, and anyone who is involved in the competition.
  2. All Participants acknowledge and agree that the organizers and partners may use the competition (including any submission) for publicity, advertising or other marketing purposes, in any media, and may use the name, likeness, and hometown name and/or prize information of potential winners as part of that publicity, without additional compensation to the potential winners
  3. All personal information collected by StartHub Africa Ltd. will be used for the administration of the contest and in accordance with company’s privacy and data protection statement found at starthubafrica.org/privacy-policy
  4. This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook, Twitter or any other Social Network. You are providing your information to StartHub Africa Ltd and not to any other party. The information provided will be used in conjunction with the following Privacy and data protection Policy found at starthubafrica.org/privacy-policy
  5. The competition and these terms and conditions will be governed by Ugandan law and any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Uganda.
